A trip down memory lane

Me at the zoo – The very first Youtube video!

This is the first video ever uploaded to Youtube titled “Me at the zoo”. Not the most entertaining video, but a very important one.
It was uploaded on April 23, 2005 by Youtube’s co-founder Jawed Karim. The video is recorded at the San Diego Zoo. In 18 seconds Karim tells his audience the following:

“Alright, so here we are, in front of the elephants. The cool thing about these guys is that they have really, really, really long, uhm, trunks. And that’s cool”.

Not a terribly exciting start to the most popular video website in the world! And to this day, this is the only upload on Karim’s Youtube channel. This piece of internet history has 160 million views today

Jawed Karim met his fellow Youtube co-founders Steven Chen and Chad Hurley while working at PayPal. Together, the three partners founded Youtube in 2005. Shortly after co-founding Youtube, Karim decided to leave to enroll in graduate school at Stanford. Despite leaving the company, Karim still owned a fairly significant percentage of Youtube by the time it was sold to Google. Karim received 137,443 shares of Google which were worth $64 million that day.

Life after Youtube

After Youtube, Karim started his own venture, Youniversity Ventures (known today as Y Ventures). The company primarily focuses students and new entrepreneurs. In 2009, Karim was part of the investors who made an investment in a new company which we all know as Airbnb.

The striking thing about Jawed Karim is that he himself cannot be found on any social platform. While he is partly responsible for 1 of the largest platforms in the world.
Besides his Youtube channel with that one post from 2005, he is nowhere to be found online. So what he is doing at the moment is unknown.
