A trip down memory lane

Baby shark, a Youtube sensation

Every kid loves it, every parent hates it. Whether you like it or not, it stays in your head all day long. And even if you don’t have kids who watch baby shark al day, you’ve likely caught a hint of it somewhere and recognize the tune.

Baby shark is one of the most-watched YouTube videos of all time. The Korean family behind Baby Shark has made $125 million from the catchy tune.

It’s easy to understand why the video is so popular. The lyrics are repetitive and easy to remember. And the dance motions are easy to follow for toddlers. The video is uploaded by a Korean education company called Pinkfong. The video dates back to 2016 but really became a hit when people began posting videos of themselves doing the dance moves and hashtagging it with the hashtag #babysharkchallenge. In just a few years, the video has become one of the most watched Youtube videos in the platform’s history.

Pinkfong was founded in South Korea in 2010 by three former game developers. Pinkfong never expected the success of baby shark. The situation is similar to the success of ‘Gangnam Style’, another Korean Youtube hit. Most people think that the word fong in Pinkfong means fox, because of the companies pink mascot, but that is not the case. It actually doesn’t mean anything. One of the founders thought that fong was a fun word. Nowadays they do refer fong to the famous pink fox that you see before all their videos. Therefore it’s easy to understand where the confusion is come from.

At this time the video is viewed more than 8 billion times
